We're down to two weeks of the legislative session to go! We've had some ups and downs over the last two weeks. The big disappointment was the failure of HJ Resolution 002. That was the constitutional amendment to create a 4th tier for property taxes. It would have put residential real estate in a separate tier, and then it could have been taxed differently. We needed a 2/3rds vote for the amendment. Unfortunately the "Freedom Caucus" wanted an amendment to add cap language, and they could not get that passed. Therefore, they threw the baby out with the bathwater and voted as a block against the amendment. The vote was 37 - 25.
Since the amendment language would not go to the voters until November 2024, we will have another shot in the budget session in 2024. We have a lot of work to do between now and then.
The good news...
The drone bill died in Committee.
The "stinky ag" bill was assigned to the Corporations committee, and it does not appear that the Chairman wants to hear it. If it's not heard by the 24th, it's dead.
The annexation bill passed both houses and is on the Governor's desk for his signature!
This week we will be focusing on interim study topics. The rental regulation bill will be on our list.
