2026 Legislative Update - Week 5

And it's over.. well almost. The Wyoming Legislature will go back into session next Wednesday to attempt veto overrides. However, we're pretty much done. Of all the bills that we've watched, 5 survived. None are in jeopardy of veto. So we're done.

Of note is that the Business Council iis funded agian to a lesser degree, but not totally destoryed as the initial attempt was. The university has funding restored with some debate yet to go regarding accountability. We lost the bill that would have amended the zoning protest amendments. Not sure why, it appeared odd. No one opposed it publically, but got voted down in the House Committee 2-6. Lots of speculation, but no real knowledge of why.

Next up is the Interim Committee topics. One terrible idea froming from a Senator in Campbell County is to replace all residential property tax with a 2% real estae transfer tax. First, it would be hugely damaging to first-time homeowners. Second, it messes with the free market badly and finally, would not generate anough money to adequately fund our schools. But other than that. So, my friends, while you didn't get any Calls to Action this session, just know that there will be some coming during the interim session. The first Revenue Committee will be in June... Stay tuned! L.

Update:

Dear REALTORS, I somewhat erred in my last message. While there was an interim subject suggested regarding a 2% Real Estate Transfer TAx, I tagged the Chariman of the Committee, Troy McKowen with bringing it forward, but after watching the video again, it was Senator Bob Ide that brought it forward, while giving Sen. McKowen credit for it. Just wanted to be clear. L.
